Community Voices Heard

Community Voices Heard

The CSRD staff came out to the North and South Shuswap in early March to gather feedback from the community in terms of how their emergency services, and other events that the CSRD had control over, were handled. The report is now available. From the discussion that will come to the CSRD board on Thursday this week, a number of recommendations have been identified. I think that all these recommendations are valuable and I hope that many/most/all are implemented. What’s…

Service Organizations Hire Locally

Service Organizations Hire Locally

I just had a meeting with Samaritans Purse. You may remember them as being one of the first service organizations that arrived after the fire. They came to help ‘sift the ashes’ of burned homes to try to retrieve any possible sentimental or valuable keepsakes. They were very helpful. They’ve just hired a new person to continue working in the area. Leila Lewis (of our local Lewis quarry family) is brand new (so give her a bit of time to come…

Spring flooding

Spring flooding

I’ve been contacted by a few people this week telling me about water running in places where it hasn’t been before. We have to expect this unfortunately. I think it would be a good idea to document where these locations are so that we can inform Ministry of Transportation/AIM to be on the lookout for floods and culvert blockages below these locations. Please remember that culverts under your driveway are your responsibility, culverts across roads are theirs. To advise of…

CSRD to Listen

CSRD to Listen

The CSRD wants to hear about our experience of the fire. What can the CSRD learn about their operations, from our shared trauma? What can be made better? Please plan to attend one of the sessions on March 7, 9, 10, 11, 13 or 14. Things we can talk about are:– pre-fire communication– how did we all get alerts – alertable app? other ways?– timing of alerts– how the evacuation went– once evacuated how was the process with ESS and other…

Jay withdraws from MLA race

Jay withdraws from MLA race

Hi All, I’m writing today to let you know that upon a lot of reflection,  I’ve decided not to continue this path towards the BC United MLA position.  I originally considered this opportunity as I felt it would be interesting to be an MLA, work with a different group of co-workers, and push the North Shuswap and broader Shuswap agenda at the provincial level. My concern was that I knew I might be leaving a community just starting to heal from the fire…

Firehall Feedback

Firehall Feedback

I’ve mentioned North Shuswap 2040 before. That’s my focus when considering bigger issues that take up space in my mental inbox, it’s like thinking ahead and what’s best for your children when they grow up. The Scotch Creek/Lee Creek Firehall is one of those issues. So, what does Scotch Creek/Lee Creek 2040 look like? Well, SC/LC 2021 looked like this: Full time population almost 1400, an increase of 27% from 2016. I don’t think it’s fair to extrapolate a population…

BC Public Lands Process

BC Public Lands Process

“VICTORIA — The New Democrats have quietly launched public consultation on their plan to begin co-management of government-owned land with B.C.’s 204 First Nations.” So starts one of the articles below. These changes have the power to affect crown land use throughout the Province for any segment of users. “These include things like grazing leases, mining leases, licenses of occupation, dock permits, rights of way, etc. These types of decisions are a major part of governing the land base and…

NS Disaster Relief Society update

NS Disaster Relief Society update

I’m sure most of you are aware that this society was just recently set up to funnel funds from the Shuswap Community Foundation through to those most in need due to the fire. The board has been very busy, and spending a lot more time than was initially thought it would take, to get the money flowing. And that’s ok, it’s super important, and very gratifying when we are able to provide some comfort or supplies to people who have…
